After winning the 1A Tri-Central sectional championship, the Rossville Hornets boys’ basketball team enters Saturday’s regional tournament against an all-too-familiar foe.
The Hornets (11-15) will take on the No. 10 Lafayette Central Catholic Knights (15-9) in the Frankfort regional semifinals. The Knights knocked off the Hornets in last year’s regional semifinals and have won the last twelve contests between the two teams, including a 56-49 win at Rossville during the regular season.
The other regional semifinal also features a rematch as the defending regional champion No. 4 Liberty Christian Lions (23-3) take on the Seton Catholic Cardinals (18-6).
The Hornets have saved some of their best basketball for the end of the season, winning the last five out of six contests including three wins in the sectional tournament.
Senior Clayton Howard spoke of the team’s improvements late in the season after the sectional championship win.
“We’ve been moving the ball a lot more, our offense and defense are both a lot better, and I think we’ve been a lot sharper, more efficient,” he said. “We’ve had role players step up. It hasn’t just been all of the starters.”
The Frankfort regional tournament begins at 10 a.m. Saturday with Liberty Christian versus Seton Catholic followed by Rossville against Lafayette Central Catholic at noon. The advancing teams will play in the regional final at 8 p.m.
