ROSSVILLE – The Rossville Hornets beat the Frontier Falcons 61-31 Tuesday night to move on to the next round of Class 1A Sectionals.
Rossville freshman Maggie Deboy led the Hornets with 21 points and sophomore Keely Criswell followed with 14 points. Deboy made a big impact with steals and went 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
Both teams were in zone defenses throughout most of the game. Rossville was in a full-court 2-1-2 zone and then dropped back into a 3-2 zone. As for Frontier, they started out in a man-to-man defense, but quickly changed to a 3-2 zone after getting scored on repeatedly.
The Hornets led 20-6 after the first quarter and 38-8 at halftime.
Frontier struggled offensively in the first half due to Rossville’s tight zone defense and traps they set in their full-court zone press. In the third quarter Frontier picked up the pace and ended up with 15 points, which made the score 54-23 going into the final quarter.
“The hardest part was probably trying to slow down the upbeat tempo of the game,” Rossville senior Breanna Wainscott said describing the last half of the game. She also said she was very proud of her team with how they played.
Frontier junior Abbie Mikesell led the Falcons with nine points while junior Destinee Boatman and sophomore Nicole Farve added seven points each.
Frontier was 11-of-57 from the field compared to Rossville’s 24-of-71. Frontier’s lack of shooting production combined with Rossville’s tight defensive pressure led to the Hornet victory.
Rossville earned its first sectional win in five years and will face Carroll in the semifinals Friday.
