LAFAYETTE – Rossville’s Adam Easterday and Austin Erdman qualified for the wrestling regional tournament by placing in Saturday’s sectional tournament held at Lafayette Jefferson.
Easterday (16-4) has had a short senior year of wrestling due to a shoulder injury at the beginning of the season. He lost to Harrison senior JR Pullins (36-5) in the 145-pound final by a 12-0 major decision.
“I got my shoulder, which is partially separated anyways, caught too many times, and I couldn’t get out like I need to,” Easterday said of his championship match.
Erdman (38-8), a sophomore, placed third in the 126-pound weight class. He defeated Lafayette Jefferson senior Austin McGreevy (32-10) in the third place match 8-6 with 33 seconds left in the overtime period.
“I will need to work on my speed and transition,” Erdman said. “The hardest part about my final match was going into overtime.”
Rossville senior Joecy Martin will be an alternate for the regional tournament after finishing fifth at the 195-pound weight class. He pinned Benton Central freshman Bryson Ford in his last match.
Rossville sophomore Josh Guffey did not qualify for regional tournament, but finished in sixth place at the 138-pound weight class. Seniors Billy Dotson and Jacob Taylor finished their season out strong, but did not qualify for regional tournament. Junior Kraig Tumey and sophomore Devin Hodgen were unable to participate in the sectional tournament due to injury or illness.
Billy Birge, Rossville head coach, said the most important thing to prepare for this upcoming weekend is to recover mentally and physically. He also said they will need to nail down some moves and work on things they need to improve on before this weekend.
As a team, Rossville placed seventh out of 11 schools with 51 points. The regional tournament will be held Saturday at Logansport.
