MICHIGANTOWN – The final results were about to be announced as the Clinton Prairie and Rossville wrestling teams gathered together to see if they pulled it off to become the 2015 Hoosier Heartland Conference champions.

The results were read from sixth place up, starting with Carroll (13 points) then Tri-Central (121), host Clinton Central (146) and third place Sheridan (164).

When it was announced that Rossville finished second with 183 points the Clinton Prairie team erupted in celebration knowing they won the conference championship for the first time in school history. Clinton Prairie edged Rossville by eight points, finishing with a team score of 191.

“A couple of weeks ago we started going back to the basics, and we just worked our tails off,” said Jason Chopick, Clinton Prairie head coach. “These guys wanted this, they knew Rossville is a great competitor, and we knew what we needed to do to pull this off.”

Clinton Prairie only had one individual tournament champion (Isaiah Gingerich, 113), but took second or third place at 10 weight classes. Rossville had four individual champions, including repeat champions Austin Erdman (126) and Adam Easterday (145). Devin Hodgen (160) and Joecy Martin (195) also won their weight class for Rossville.

Clinton Central had three conference champions in Colten Mennen (106), Cale Lucas (132) and Devin George (170).

Final round results

Clinton Central’s Mennen (35-3) pinned Tri-Central’s Wyatt Shupperd (18-13) in the first period to win the 106-pound weight class.

Clinton Prairie’s Gingerich (13-7) pinned Clinton Central’s Cody Miller (12-15) with eight seconds remaining in the final period to win the 113-pound weight class.

In the 120-pound weight class Tri-Central’s Chance Mason (18-12) pinned Clinton Prairie’s Brody Fossnock (10-9) in the first period of the finals. Clinton Central’s Robert Ray (15-23) defeated Sheridan’s Noah White (4-7) to earn third place.

Rossville’s Erdman (32-7) defeated Clinton Central’s Trenton McQuinn (21-18) by a 12-6 decision to win the 126-pound weight class. Clinton Prairie’s Nevan Freestone (15-5) defeated Tri-Central’s Trent Shaffer (3-7) to finish in third place.

Clinton Central’s Lucas (19-19) beat Sheridan’s Justin Delph (17-9) by a 4-2 decision to win the 132-pound weight class. Rossville’s David Hopkins (9-19) lost to Carroll’s Isaac Doerflein (9-17) to finish fourth.

Rossville’s Josh Guffey (30-10) was pinned by Tri-Central’s Jarron Grubb (26-10) in the second period of the 138-pound final to finish in second place. Clinton Prairie’s Jerehme Walker (6-14) lost to Sheridan’s Joe Callahan (16-13) to take fourth place.

Rossville’s Easterday (14-3) pinned Tri-Central’s Jordon Thurston (24-12) in the second period of the 145-pound final to take first place. Clinton Prairie’s Noah Rynerson (6-13) beat Sheridan’s Gage Delph (1-2) to earn third place.

Sheridan’s Collin Ells (21-8) pinned Rossville’s Jacob Taylor (18-7) in the second period of the final to win the 152-pound weight class. Clinton Prairie’s Noah Freestone (10-6) finished third after beating Tri-Central’s Jordan Gregory (8-25).

Rossville’s Hodgen (16-5) beat Clinton Prairie’s Braxton Barnett (14-6) by a 10-5 decision to win the 160-pound weight class. Clinton Central’s Ethan Cripe (7-26) finished fourth after losing to Tri-Central’s Caleb Duncan (24-9) in the third place match.

In the 170-pound weight class Clinton Central’s George (16-17) defeated Rossville’s Ethan Ladd (22-14) by a 9-6 decision. Clinton Prairie’s Lars Hovde (13-8) defeated Sheridan’s Ethan Reynolds (6-6) to take third place.

Clinton Prairie’s Kenneth Boller (16-4) battled through two periods before being pinned by Sheridan’s Austin Hoover (27-1) in the first place match.

Rossville’s Martin (33-7) pinned Clinton Prairie’s Eric Blubaugh (16-4) in the first period to win the 195-pound weight class. Clinton Central’s Tristen Hoffman (17-22) defeated Sheridan’s Cameron Powell (12-12) to earn third place.

Clinton Prairie’s Tyler Smith (14-6) was pinned by Sheridan’s Jake Eidson (23-6) in the second period of the 220-pound final to finish in second place. Rossville’s Billy Dotson (14-18) took third place over Clinton Central’s Dakota Kelley (2-2).

In the 285-pound weight class Sheridan’s David Powers (7-1) took first place due to an injury forfeit by Rossville’s Kraig Tumey (16-16). Clinton Prairie’s Jacob Garrett (5-1) took third place by forfeit.
