The Rossville Hornets hosted the Delphi Oracles in a non-conference game Tuesday and lost 3-2.
Rossville lost to the same Delphi team they beat 5-1 to win the championship game of the Hot Dog Invitational in Frankfort Aug.23.
Despite the outcome of their first meeting, Rossville head coach Joel Wilson said he knew it was going to be a tough game.
“Delphi always plays us tough,” Wilson said before the start of the game.
Despite several scoring opportunities, especially in the first few minutes, the Hornets were held scoreless in the first half and went into halftime down 2-0.
The Hornets’ offense picked up in the second half as senior Zane Gottschalk and junior Griffey Saylor scored. It ended up being too little; too late as the Oracles held off the Hornets for the 3-2 win.
“Tough loss,” Wilson said after the game. “We played flat until the end and ran out of time in our attempted comeback.”
The Hornets will now prepare for their first sectional game as they face the Tipton Blue Devils at Northwestern Tuesday.
Wilson said his team will look to build off their 4-0 win over Central Catholic Sept. 24 moving into sectional play.
“We’re just going to keep building from our last game at Central Catholic,” Wilson said prior to the Delphi game. “I think we played one of our more complete games that game.”
After the loss to the Oracles, the Hornets are now 9-5 on the regular season.
