Rossville’s boys’ basketball team accomplished something Wednesday night that it hadn’t done in 11 years.
For the first time since 2002, the Hornets opened their season with a victory. They traveled to Hoosier Heartland Conference foe Sheridan to begin their season. Their opening-game triumph came in a high-scoring contest, 82-61.
“We shot the ball really well,” Rossville head coach Dave Mosson said. “We got a lot of shots from the inside. We shot 65 percent from the twos. Defensively, after we made a couple of adjustments in what we were doing, I thought we did a pretty decent job. We still have a long ways to go defensively. Overall, it was a good win.”
Rossville’s E.T. Brenneman was the man of the night as he earned a triple double in the victory. Brenneman scored 18 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and dished 10 assists to lead the Hornets.
“He had the ball in his hands,” Mosson said of his point guard. “He had seven assists in the first half. He had a great game.”
Brandon Tonsoni led the Hornets in scoring Wednesday night. He racked up 25 points in the win. Austin Miller and Kyle Bordner also scored in double figures with 15 and 10 points, respectively.
The Hornets came out on fire, taking a 27-15 lead after the first quarter. They maintained a similar margin, 45-32, at halftime, despite Sheridan making several three-pointers. The Hornets built a 63-48 lead after three quarters and a strong fourth quarter opened up the lead to its final margin.
Rossville will host Western Boone at 6 p.m. Saturday at home.
